Jambo friends and family

Last week was busy, but not a lot with the children. Me and the other volunteers were really hard working in the new building for the kids. The building is getting more and more finished. I hope I can see the kids moving to their new home! Its so much bigger and lighter for them. The home were they now live in is in the city and very dark and small. They have the walls secured with broken glass on the top of the walls. Cheap solution don’t you think? In Holland we have technology, like alarm systems and that kind of stuff.

The weekends are always for the children, because they are free from school and then there is time to go to other places, like to the farm of jacksons family (where I sleep and the new home is coming for the children). Saturday we went to jacksons place to play with the kids and Sunday to the green hill Hotel, were they had a swimming pool and a nice playground. I have brought some nailpolish from Holland, so asked the girls if they want to polish their nails. Haha I didn’t have to ask it twice. When I got it, all the girls were ready. They aren’t allowed to have nail polish on their fingernails, only on their feet, because of the rules on school. They were all the same school uniforms and they have to got clean nails. I don’t think you have to try this at home, hahahah! For in Europe, this kind of things are really old fashioned!

That reminds me of how they make minced meat here at the butchery. They use really old fashioned machines tot mince the meat. You almost forget how it looks like before it is minced meat, because when you buy it in Holland it is already done for you and looks like minced meat. But here it gets cut of the hanging meat, chopped and then through the machine. Almost like hundred years ago haha! We were buying meat, because we have cooked chilli con carne this week haha! It tasted really good, not the same in Holland, because we didn’t find all the right ingredients. The brother of Jackson, Steven, is chef here and he rated our diner with a 7! Hahaha so it wasn’t too bad!
The electricity and water was a luxury this week, because sometimes there wasn’t any water or only something the tank were they collect water from rain. Even up here, you get used to the possibility of warm water and a shower. But you changed the way you live at it goes here, so than you only wash yourself. No Worries, or as they say: Hakuna Matata! Hahah really funny! It always reminds me of the lion king! But its really a phrase here!
Patrick, the boy that was sick last week, is feeling a bit better now. (as you can see on the picture). He is really quick tired, I think because of the medicine he gets, but the fever is a bit gone. I really hope it isn’t epilepsy! But we will see.. he can smile again so that’s a really good thing ;)

Jackson tells us a lot of things about Kenya, like the difference between before and after the independence. It was a British colony and you really can see the influence of that. Like African thee, is the same as British tea, with milk in it. And I have found Salt & Vinegar crisps, so I will take some home;)

On Friday I will go on safari for three days, to the Masai Mara. I will go with Ineke, Tessa and her boyfriend, Berry. Tessa is the one who set up Upendo! Its really nice to have her here. She brought more budget for the new home, so the go on finishing the living room etc. This weekend they have put in the floor, so we can start searching for a great color for the living room! We are thinking about a kind of blue/green. The bedrooms are almost finished. I think the workers here, think it is kind of funny to see all of us painting and working. When we, me and Janneke, wanted to get starting to paint the floor a worker came to us and explained that we have to start by the window and then work to the door. Otherwise we will get in trouble with the wet paint. Hahah if we didn’t think of that? But we just agreed and let him think he did explain a really important thing!

Only 18 days left here, its really going fast!

So that’s it for now!

A really big hug for everyone out there!

Love,
Siobhan
